Teaching Theory in School

The Commisar (among others) is displeased with a statement made by President Bush in vague support of Intelligent Design theory being taught in schools:

President Bush said Monday he believes schools should discuss ‘’intelligent design’’ alongside evolution when teaching students about the creation of life.

During a round-table interview with reporters from five Texas newspapers, Bush declined to go into detail on his personal views of the origin of life. But he said students should learn about both theories, Knight Ridder Newspapers reported.

‘’I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought,’’ Bush said. ‘’You’re asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes.’

I don’t know enough about Intelligent Design (or frankly, evolution) to comment on those aspects. What’s important to examine is the motives of those involved. There’s no doubt that most ID proponents are believers in the Judeo-Christian God (or are at least comfortable with the idea). Darwin’s Theory of Evolution has been borne out (but not “proven”, it is still a theory rather than a scientific law) with numerous examples such as the similarity in bone structure between a whale’s flipper and a bird’s wing. Darwinists are generally (but not always) opponents of organized religion if not outright atheists.

In a perfect world, teachers and schools could present all the information and let the student make up his own mind. Unfortunately, critical thinking, ethics, and basic human morals are not effectively taught in public schools, and that is ultimately a much bigger sin than whether evolution or ID is taught. There’s no point in going all Clarence Darrow / William Jennings Bryan on this until the students are properly educated.

Despite No Child Left Behind, Johnny and Susie still aren’t reading all that gud. Their ethical and scientific educations are no better. Introducing ID when scientific education is already substandard is unlikely to improve anything.
